Baiturrahman Grand Mosque (Mesjid Raya Baiturrahman) was witness of Aceh history and it is as a memorable monument for Acehnese people. It is located in the central business district of Banda Aceh. The mosque represents religious, gallantry and patriotism symbol of Acehnese people. This mosque was built in the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636). This mosque is the science education center in the archipelago. At that time many students from the archipelago, even from the Arabs, Turks, Indians, and Persians who came to Aceh to study religion. This mosque is the headquarters of the Acehnese defense when war with the Dutch (1873-1904). In the event of war in Aceh in 1873, the mosque was burned down by the Dutch army. At that time, Major General Khohler shot dead in the forehead by a troop Aceh in the courtyard of the Mosque. To commemorate the event, built a small monument in front of the left side of the Mosque, precisely under the tree ketapang.
